Tong Shanshan is a Senior Research Fellow specializing in urban built environments and building envelope performance. She earned her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and joined NUS as a research fellow in 2015.

Her research interests include microclimate monitoring, urban climatic mapping, thermal comfort, and passive building design. She has led and contributed to several research projects focused on mitigating urban heat islands (UHI) and enhancing the energy efficiency of tropical buildings.

In the BEAM initiative, she oversees heat island mitigation applications, such as cool paint and solar film. Her work involves conducting pre- and post-application measurements to assess their impact on the surrounding microclimate, indoor comfort, heat gain, and energy performance.

Research Interests:

  • Passive building design features

  • Facade thermal performance

  • Outdoor thermal comfort

  • Urban microclimate
